Myanmar sends back 48 more "boat people" to Bangladesh

Xinhua, December 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar authorities have repatriated 48 more verified Bangladeshi boat people home, official media reported Thursday.

Myanmar immigration officials in Maungdaw District handed over them to the Bangladesh border guard force at the border on Wednesday, said the Global New Light of Myanmar.

Myanmar has sent back a total of 777 verified Bangladeshi boat people in seven batches so far.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the remaining boat people are being investigated and they will be handed over to their countries of origin when the verifying process is completed.

Myanmar navy rescued over 200 boat people in Rakhine state's Maungtaw and over 700 in Ayeyawaddy region's Pyapon in May when patrolling in Myanmar waters.

Investigation by the Myanmar government found that some of the boat people had fallen victim to human trafficking rings and crime syndicates after receiving offer of work in Thailand and Malaysia from illegal job brokers. Endit
