Soldier killed, 8 wounded in PKK attack in SE Turkey

Xinhua, December 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Turkish soldier was killed and eight others wounded on Wednesday in an attack by the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in the southeastern Turkey, private Dogan news agency reported.

The PKK militants remotely detonated a bomb placed on the Mardin-Midyat motorway during the passing of a military convoy in Mardin province, according to the report.

A Turkish soldier was killed and five soldiers in the military vehicle and three civilians also passing in their own vehicles were wounded, said the report.

The Turkish security forces blocked the motorway to traffic as a widescale operation was launched to capture the PKK militants behind the attack, added the report.

The PKK negotiated a ceasefire with Ankara in 2013, but the truce fell apart in the wake of a suicide bomb attack on July 20, which killed 33 pro-Kurdish and left-wing activists in the border town of Suruc in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa.

Tensions have been running high, especially in southeastern Turkey, as major military operations against PKK militants have been under way since July. Endit
