Cuba reinstates travel restrictions on medical professionals

Xinhua, December 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cuba has reinstated travel restrictions on medical professionals in a bid to avoid a medical brain drain, the official Granma daily reported Tuesday.

As from Dec. 7, Cuban medical professionals are required to apply for permit from the Health Ministry before their travels abroad, according to the report.

Restrictions were lifted in January 2013 as part of reforms to relax onerous regulations. However, a sudden uptick in migration sparked by the restoration of ties between Cuba and the United States has raised concerns of a medical brain drain.

Cuban doctors are especially coveted by the U.S. government, which aims to lure Cuban doctors working in third countries to the U.S., the Granma report said. Endi
