Austria creates quarters for 3,000 refugees under new law

Xinhua, December 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

New refugee quota in Austria has enabled its federal government to create housing quarters for 3,000 more refugees, the Interior Ministry said Monday.

The new constitution implemented in early October stipulates that the number of refugees housed in provisional quarters do not exceed 1.5 percent of a state's or municipality's population.

Nine quarters were set up in five states, of which five were already put into use, the ministry said.

Up to now, the state of Carinthia has featured most prominently in the establishment of such quarters, with 350 places available across two quarters, and a further two quarters to be opened in December that can cater up to 450 people each.

Styria, Upper Austria, and Burgenland are among other states in which such quarters have already been established.

More quarters are also planned for areas where refugee intake quotas are yet to be met, said the ministry. Endi
