UN chief condemns attack against UN mission base in DR Congo

Xinhua, December 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday condemned an attack against a base of the UN mission in Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) by Ugandan rebels.

The attack by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) took place on Sunday in Makembi in North Kivu province. One peacekeeper from Malawi was killed and another was wounded during a heavy exchange of fire, according to a statement released by Ban's spokesperson.

Ban called for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice, while saying he is "extremely concerned" by the series of attacks by the ADF in the area, "which have already resulted in more than 500 known civilian deaths since October 2014."

"The Secretary-General reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to support the authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in their efforts to neutralize armed groups and end impunity, in line with MONUSCO's mandate," said the statement.

The ADF, a partly Islamist grouping of Ugandan origin formed in the 1990s, has continued to commit atrocities and human rights abuses that include killings of civilians, rape, abductions and looting in DR Congo despite the Congolese military hunting them. Enditem
