Namibia edges Botswana in women's U17 World Cup qualifier

Xinhua, December 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Namibian women's U17 soccer team beat Botswana 2-1 in the preliminary round of the 2016 FIFA Under-17 World Cup qualifiers on Sunday.

The team took on Botswana in Gaborone in this first leg match and made history as they became the first Namibian junior soccer side to win away from home.

Namibia's strikers Kylie van Wyk and Fransisca Haoses ensured their team's victory as the two strikers bagged a goal each.

"We played very well. It was a victory well deserved," said their coach Mbakera.

"And the girls are very well aware that to lose at home will be very bad. So the second leg will be huge for us. It won't be easy but we will be working on the mistakes from the first leg and then try to finish the work in Windhoek."

Namibia hosts Botswana on Dec. 11 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium. The winner of the tie will advance to the first round where Nigeria awaits in early January next year.

The winner of that fixture will then play in the final round against either Zambia or South Africa for a place at the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women World Cup, the fifth edition, in Jordan. Endi
