Dormitory fire kills 7 in Nigeria's Kano State: official

Xinhua, December 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least seven female students died after a fire broke out at a dormitory in a public secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern state of Kano late Sunday, an official said Monday.

About 21 others are being treated for sustaining injuries in a stampede caused by the dormitory fire, said Hussain Ganduje, head of Kano State secondary schools management board. The deceased students were not actually burned to death but might have suffered suffocation during the stampede, the official said.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated, the official told Xinhua but did not raise any particular suspicion on the incident.

A provincial government statement on Monday said the fire has been put under control and the school will be temporarily shut pending the conclusion of ongoing investigation of the fire outbreak.

A source said the students were sleeping when the fire broke out and hundreds struggled through two exits to escape being hurt. Endit
