China's Winter Games to be held 4,500km apart

Xinhua, November 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

One of the most thrilling events in the Chinese Winter Games will take place 4,500 kilometers away from the main host city.

The organizers of the 13th National Winter Games announced on Monday that the games scheduled to open in Urumqi, Xinjiang, in January 2016 will see its ski jumping competitions take place in Yabuli in the northeasternmost Helongjiang Province.

"Considering the cost of building venues, we have decided to move ski jumping to Yabuli which has facilities in place," said Li Guangming, a leading organizer.

Li added that Xinjiang doesn't have a ski jump venue and it costs 100 million yuan (15.6 million US dollars) to build one.

Li noted that only 10 athletes have entered ski jump races of the games.

The ski jump event will open two days prior to the official start of the Jan. 20-31 games. Enditem
