Storm leaves thousands of Swedish households powerless

Xinhua, November 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

A storm swept southern Sweden on Monday, leaving tens of thousands of households powerless and disrupting train traffic, local media reported.

The storm nearly reached hurricane speeds, news agency TT reported, causing authorities to temporarily close the Oresund Bridge that connects Sweden and Denmark before opening it again at rush hour on Monday morning.

"We have 27,000 powerless households after seeing about 75,000 households affected at the peak," power company Eon's spokesperson Jakob Holmstrom told public broadcaster Swedish Radio in the afternoon.

Eon representatives said some customers may have to wait for two or three days to have their electricity restored, daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported.

Authorities suspended all train routes in southern Sweden until the early hours on Monday, while drivers in several places struggled to pass on tree-covered roads.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute scaled back its warnings as the storm subsided but said in the afternoon that parts of southwestern Sweden would continue to experience disruptions on Monday evening. Endit
