China calls for protection of UN peacekeepers after Mali attack

China condemned a deadly attack on United Nations peacekeepers in north Mali last week, calling for effective measures to protect UN peacekeepers.

Gunmen attacked and fired rockets at a UN peacekeeping base in Kidal in northern Mali earlier Saturday, killing two peacekeepers from Guinea and a contractor from Burkina Faso. Twenty other people were wounded, including four who were seriously injured.

"China strongly condemns the violence against the peacekeepers, and extends condolences to the victims and sincere sympathies to their families and the injured," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular news briefing.

"China urges all parties to take effective measures to protect the safety of UN peacekeepers," Hua said.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack on Saturday, stressing "the urgent need to bring the perpetrators of this attack to justice." Endi
