Laos' Nam Ou cascade hydropower project starts electricity generation

The first turbine of Laos' Nam Ou cascade hydropower project, which is constructed by Power Construction Corporation of China, officially began electricity generation Sunday.

The cascade hydropower station, completed four months ahead of the scheduled plan, is among a drainage basin hydropower development plan fully carried out by a Chinese enterprise.

Lao Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad attended the inaugural ceremony held Sunday in Lao northern Luang Prabang province, and pressed the start button for electricity generation.

Addressing the ceremony, Lao Minister of Energy and Mines Khammany Inthilath said the Nam Ou hydropower project has an important role in regulating seasonal drought in the Nam Ou river basin, ensuring downstream irrigation for plantation and reducing soil erosion.

General Manager of Power Construction Corporation of China Sun Hongshui said his corporation will continue to fulfill the corporate social responsibilities, contributing to socio-economic development of Laos.

Nam Ou river is a branch of Mekong river in Laos. Nam Ou drainage basin hydropower development plan is a seven-dam cascade project with total installed capacity of 1,272 MW and annual generating capacity of some 5,000 GWh. Endit
