Russia's Rashid Khalikov named to senior UN humanitarian affairs official position

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday announced the appointment of Rashid Khalikov from Russia as assistant secretary-general for humanitarian partnerships with the Middle East and Central Asia.
Khalikov has extensive experience in humanitarian affairs within the United Nations, who most recently served as director of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva, Switzerland, since 2010, leading the work in building stronger partnerships, resource mobilization and emergency preparedness, according to a statement from UN spokesperson's office.
"He brings wealth of experience in engaging with partners, including with Regional Organizations, in particular in the Middle East and Asia, as well as the private sector," it said.
Khalikov joined the United Nations in 1993. In 2005 he became head of the OCHA Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand, and the Area Humanitarian Coordinator in the aftermath of the South Asia earthquake.
In 2009 and 2010, Khalikov led missions to Pakistan, Yemen, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Kyrgyzstan to evaluate in-country humanitarian conditions, while developing recommendations on the UN's humanitarian role in crises there. Enditem
