Former senior Sri Lankan police officer found guilty of murder

A former senior Sri Lankan police officer along with his son and four others were sentenced to death by a high court in the capital on Friday over the murder of a businessman in 2013.

Local media reports said the case of Former Deputy Inspector General of Police Vaas Gunewardena and five others was heard by trial at bar comprising of three judges.

Gunewardena was arrested in June 2013, three weeks after the body of Mohammed Shiyam was found mutilated and with gun shot wounds in a rural area near the capital.

Shiyam had gone missing after dining with a friend in a Colombo suburb.

His friend was arrested and later confessed to arranging a contract killing carried out by a group of police officers including Gunewardena. Endit
