Road accidents kill 25 Cambodians during Water Festival holiday

Xinhua, November 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Traffic fatalities over the last three days of the Water Festival dropped remarkably compared with 2014, with 25 deaths this year compared to 34 reported last year, according to a report posted on the Cambodian National Police's website on Friday.

Some 55 road accidents resulted in 25 deaths and 77 injuries from Tuesday to Thursday, in comparison to 72 accidents causing 34 deaths and 132 injuries in road crashes during last year's festival, the report said.

"Some 76 of the victims in road crashes this year were not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident," it said, adding that high-speed and alcohol drivings were the main causes of the accidents.

The Water Festival holiday was celebrated from Nov. 24 to 26, but this year, there were no boat races along the river in front of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh due to low water levels. Endit
