Kenya tightens security in coastal town during cultural festival

Xinhua, November 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Security has been tightened in Kenya's coastal town of Lamu where a cultural festival is taking place, authorities said Thursday.

Lamu County Commissioner Fredrick Ndambuki said more police officers have been deployed to the town to ensure safety during the event.

"We wish to assure both local and foreigners of sufficient security during this festive season," Ndambuki said.

The festival, featuring Swahili culture, beach sights and swimming competitions, aims to boost Kenya's tourism sector that has been hit hard by security challenges.

Sam Ikwaye, executive director of Kenya's Hotelkeepers Association Coastal Region, said the festival had attracted more than 30,000 domestic and foreign visitors.

A deadly attack by Al-Shabaab militants in Mpeketoni town in Lamu district last year claimed more than 90 lives, dealing a blow to the tourism.

Ndambuki said an ongoing operation by the Kenyan army had pushed back Al-Shabaab in the region. Enditem
