Afghan militancy and counter-militancy have claimed two dozen lives from both anti-government militants and security forces in the conflict-ridden country over the past two days, officials said Thursday.
Air strikes against Taliban militants in the eastern province of Khost alone had left 10 armed insurgents dead and injured 20 others.
"U.S. drone pounded the militants' hideout in Ali Shir district of Khost province Wednesday night, killing 10 insurgents including notorious Pakistani Taliban commander Sayed Sajna," a local security official told Xinhua but declined to be identified.
Jawed Joshan, governor of Ali Shir district said that U.S. drone targeted the Taliban militants in Babrak Tana area Wednesday night, killing 10 armed insurgents on the spot.
It is reported that Sayed Sajna and his Afghan friend doctor Khan were among those killed in the air strike.
The restive Ali Shir district borders Pakistan's tribal area of Karam agency where militants often operate across the border.
The ongoing crackdown against the Taliban in southern Helmand province has left 11 insurgents dead since Wednesday.
"Units of the national army have killed 11 armed insurgents in Narh-e-Saraj, Gereshk and Sangin districts since Wednesday and captured 11 others," a statement of the national army's public relations unit said Thursday.
Moreover, a mine planted by the Taliban in Khakriz district of southern Kandahar province claimed the lives of three police and injured two senior officers, spokesman for Kandahar provincial government Samim Khapalwak confirmed Thursday.
Taliban militants claimed responsibility for the deadly roadside bombing, insisting five police were killed in the attack.
Similar roadside bombing in the eastern city of Jalalabad injured three civilians Thursday, officials said. Enditem
