Convict of leaking state secrets to serve shorter sentence outside prison

Xinhua, November 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

A prisoner convicted of leaking state secrets has had her sentence cut short and will be allowed to serve it outside of prison, a Beijing court announced on Thursday.

Beijing Higher People's Court announced that Gao Yu, a journalist sentenced to seven years in prison in April, will only serve five years after her appeal was heard on Tuesday.

Gao, 71, had her sentence reduced after she confessed her crimes, said a statement of the court.

Gao will be allowed to serve the rest of her sentence outside prison based on the fact that she suffers from "serious illness," the statement said.

A Beijing resident, Gao committed the crime of illegally providing states secrets abroad by obtaining a highly confidential documents and sending it to an overseas website in June last year. Endi
