Lufthansa cabin crew cancels strikes

Lufthansa's cabin crew union UFO on Wednesday canceled planned strikes as progress was made in talks between the two sides.
The union, which represents 19,000 flight attendants of the German airline, said it decided to call off strikes planned on Thursday, Friday and next Monday after talks with the top management of Lufthansa.
According to the airline, a basis for a solution to disputes over cabin crew's early retirement benefits were reached and mediation could be introduced to resolve issues of "growth and jobs."
Facing fierce competition from budget airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair, Lufthansa is trying to cut employee benefits in order to reduce operating costs. The measures triggered various disputes between the company and different trade unions.
Since April 2014, Lufthansa's pilots have staged walkouts 13 times. A week-long strike by flight attendants earlier this months grounded some 4,700 flights and affected 550,000 passengers.
Lufthansa said on Wednesday that it would hold a "job summit" on Dec. 2 with three trade unions including UFO to discuss labor disputes. Endit
