Japan calls for composed response following Turkey's downing of Russian jet

Xinhua, November 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Japanese government on Wednesday asked both Russia and Turkey to react calmly and focus on the facts following the latter shooting down a Russian fighter.

Turkey shot down the Russian jet on Tuesday, alleging the the jet breached its airspace.

"We would like the countries concerned to respond calmly based on the facts," Japan's top government spokesperson told a news conference, adding that "We expect the international community to remain united against terrorism."

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga also said that the situation will be monitored closely, without elaborating further.

Turkey has said two of its F-16 fighters shot down the Russian warplane after numerous warnings to return to Syrian airspace, while Russia has insisted its Su-24 frontline bomber posed no threat to Turkey and had not intruded in Turkey's airspace.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of serious reprisals for the strike.

Global leaders have called for the situation not to escalate further and measures be put in place to ensure incidents of a similar nature aren't repeated in the future. Endit
