Ghana targets universal water coverage by 2025

Xinhua, November 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ghana plans to achieve 100 percent access to water for its population by 2025, the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah said here on Tuesday.

He told a press conference in Accra that Ghana had secured a 48-million-U.S. dollar grant from the World Bank to address water distribution challenges in the capital.

The project will contribute toward addressing key issues confronting the water supply sector and improved water supply to urban dwellers.

Agyemang-Mensah said the grant formed part of the government's quest to achieve 100 percent water coverage by 2025.

"Our vision of providing water for all by 2025 is progressing satisfactorily and I want to assure the nation that we shall not renege on this," he said.

Ghana has made significant progress in the coverage of clean and safe water supply to citizens over the years.

According to the minister, the government is working around the clock and has taken measures to address this with the successful implementation of a number of water supply schemes.

"The interventions mentioned above and others to come on board will surely enable us attain this vision," the minister noted.

The Chinese government has also signed an agreement with Ghana to provide 1,000 boreholes for Ghanaians in five out of the 10 administrative regions. Enditem
