Ogtay Asadov reelected as Azerbaijani parliament speaker

The ruling New Azerbaijan Party's (YAP) candidate Ogtay Asadov was reelected Parliament Speaker on Tuesday by a majority vote in the 125-seat house by secret ballot at the first parliament session attended by President Ilham Aliyev, official media said.

Asadov has served as Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan (Milli Majlis) since 2005, and his party claimed a landslide victory in the country's Nov. 1 parliamentary elections, in which 767 candidates competed for 125 seats in parliament for a five-year term.

The 2015 Azerbaijan parliamentary elections were observed by 503 representatives of nearly 40 international organizations, including the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic Speaking Countries (TURKPA), the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
