Fire kills 18 African refugees died in southern Algeria

Xinhua, November 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Some 18 people died and 37 others wounded in a fire triggered by a gas explosion in southeastern Algeria on Tuesday, local media said.

The tragedy happened at a camp for African refugees in the province of Ouargla, some 800 km southeast of the capital Algiers.

About 150 African refugees, mostly from Niger, are taking shelter in the camp.

While many African refugees from neighboring Mali and Niger have chosen Algeria's south as their route to Europe via Libya, some have ended up staying in Libya and Algeria.

Algeria is repatriating hundreds of Nigerien refugees to their country of origin. Endit
