Gender reassignment, transgender people recognized in Vietnam

Xinhua, November 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Gender reassignment and transgender people are officially recognized in Vietnam as regulated in an amended version of the country's Civil Code.

The amended Civil Code was passed on Tuesday by Vietnam's 13th National Assembly at the ongoing 10th session in Vietnam's capital Hanoi.

Accordingly, the amended Civil Code regulates that gender reassignment is conducted in compliance with provisions of the code. Individual having gender reassignment has rights and responsibilities to register for changes in civil status following regulations on civil status, and has rights consistent with the reassigned gender in compliance with provisions of the code and other relevant laws, Vietnam's state-run news agency quoted the amended code as saying.

The amended Civil Code will take effect from Jan. 1, 2017.

Earlier in August when the country's current regulations do not allow the modification of transgender people's identification, nearly 600 transgender people in Vietnam, who have undergone sex reassignment surgery, have proposed having their names and identification papers changed in accordance with their reassigned gender.
