Policeman killed, 9 injured in bomb attack in Egypt's Sinai

Xinhua, November 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Egyptian policeman was killed and nine others injured in a terrorist bomb attack in North Sinai's city of Al-Arish on Tuesday, according to state-run MENA news agency.

MENA reported that Egyptian security forces foiled an attempt by terrorists to detonate a booby-trapped car outside the Swiss Inn Hotel in Al-Arish.

Security forces targeted the car while it was passing through a checkpoint before reaching to the hotel.

State TV reported another explosion was heard near a hotel in the city where judges overseeing the parliamentary elections are staying.

Egypt has witnessed anti-government attacks that have left hundreds of police and army personnel dead or injured since the military ousted former Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July 2013 in response to protests against his rule.

Most of the anti-state attacks were claimed by the "Sinai State," also known as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis group, an Islamic militant group based in Sinai and affiliated with the Islamic State. Endit
