Update: Two Palestinians killed after alleged stabbing attempts

Xinhua, November 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two Palestinians were killed after allegedly trying to attack Israelis in the West Bank on Sunday, the Israeli military and police said.

In the first incident, a Palestinian woman, armed with a knife, tried to stab two women at a bus stop near the Jewish settlement of Itamar, southwest of Nablus in the West Bank, the Israeli military said.

A civilian driver, a known settler who served as the head of the regional committee in the area, noticed the attacker and hit her with his vehicle, the Israeli police said. Soon after, a soldier shot at her and she was pronounced dead.

No Israelis were injured in the attack.

In a second incident, a Palestinian man driving a taxi allegedly tried to run over pedestrians near Kfar Adumim, a Jewish settlement in the West Bank, east of Jerusalem, the Israeli police said in a statement.

The alleged assailant then left his vehicle and attempted to stab bystanders, wounding one Israeli very lightly. A citizen at the area shot and killed the assailant, police said.

Seventeen Israelis have died in the two-month long wave of violence between Israelis and Palestinians, in lone wolf stabbing, shooting and vehicular attacks. More than 80 Palestinians have died at this time, some in clashes with Israeli security forces and others gunned down by security forces and vigilante citizens after allegedly trying to carry out attacks against Israelis.

The latest attack occurred on Saturday night, when a Palestinian stabbed and wounded four Israelis in the southern Israeli town of Kiryat Gat. The four, including a 13-year-old girl, were injured in moderate to serious condition.

The attacker managed to flee the scene but was arrested overnight by the Israeli police.

The current wave of violence was sparked amid strife over the flashpoint holy site of the al-Aqsa compound in east Jerusalem, holy to both Jews and Muslims, and amid dim prospects of a peace treaty based on the two-state solution.

Israel occupied east Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, home to about five million Palestinians, in the 1967 Mideast War. The Palestinians wish to establish a state on these territories. Endit
