UN chief saddened by passing of Kim Young-sam, former South Korean President

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday was saddened by the passing of Kim Young-sam, former president of the Republic of Korea, said a statement of Ban' s spokesman.

"He expressed his deepest condolences to the people of the Republic of Korea, especially to Kim Young-sam' s family and loved ones," it said.

The Secretary-General pays tribute to President Kim' s major contribution to the Republic of Korea' s peaceful transition to democracy, it said.

Kim, who had been hospitalized with fever since Thursday, died at 0:22 a.m. local time, according to Seoul National University Hospital. Kim was born on Dec. 20, 1927 on Koje Island off the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula. In 1992, Kim became the head of the new ruling party and was elected president, five years after his first unsuccessful presidential bid. Enditem
