UN chief calls on world to prevent liberty deprivation of children

Xinhua, November 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Marking Universal Children's Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday called on the international community to prevent children from being deprived from liberty.

In his message on the day, Ban said "far too many children languish in jail, mental health facilities or through other forms of detention," and "some children are vulnerable because they are migrants, asylum seekers, homeless or preyed on by organized criminals."

Ban said the UN is preparing a global study that can outline the scale and conditions of children deprived of their liberty, and thus securing the protection of their rights.

According to the UN, 60 million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes and almost half of them are children fleeing oppression, terrorism, violence and other violations of their human rights.

Universal Children's Day, which was established in 1954, is celebrated on Nov. 20 each year to promote international togetherness and awareness among children worldwide.

The date Nov. 20 marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989. Enditem
