Albania to receive 17 mln USD in flood relief from EU

Xinhua, November 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Albania will receive a grant of 15.9 million euros (17.0 million U.S. dollars) from the European Union in relief for floods in the first two months this year, said the Albanian Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday.

The program aims to increase the resilience to flooding by boosting earlier warnings and mechanisms for the prevention of natural disasters and the strengthening of flood protection infrastructure.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the program will increase support for communities affected by floods and raise the awareness for the necessity of key flood protection infrastructure.

It will help re-start the economic activity and agricultural production in affected areas.

According to the Albanian Daily News, floods in January and February caused the River Vjosa to burst from its banks and flooded a vast area in the country. Endi
