Austrian efforts to cope with large migrant influx nearing full capacity

Xinhua, November 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Austrian authorities on Wednesday warned they were taxed by the large ongoing influx of migrants streaming across country's border with Slovenia.

On Wednesday afternoon, 2,200 migrants were gathered at the main border crossing at the Austrian town of Spielfeld, awaiting processing and onward travel through Austria. Meanwhile, on the Slovenian side of the border, a further 4,000 were also awaiting entry into Austria, with this number expected to increase further.

Police spokesperson Christoph Grill said the influx had remained stronger than the outflows, leading to concerns of overcapacity for the authorities, national broadcaster ORF reported.

Grill said numerous fights had broken out amongst the migrants in Spielfeld as they boarded buses for onward travel.

He said the police at the site were "very exhausted" and struggling to cope under the stress. No one knows when the present situation will end, Grill said. Endit
