Iceland's population to reach 437,000 in 2065

Xinhua, November 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Iceland's population is projected to grow from 329,000 to 437,000 in the next 50 years, according to national population projections for 2015-2065 issued by the Statistics Iceland Wednesday.

According to the medium projection variant, the total population will grow to 437,000 in 2065 due to both migration and natural increase. The high variant predicts a population of 513,000 while the low variant projects to 372,000 in 2065.

The projection variants were built according to different modeling assumptions about economic growth, fertility and migration levels.

A positive natural population growth rate is expected every year during the entire period, according to the medium and high variants.

Life expectancy for Icelanders will grow from 83.5 years in 2015 to 88.5 years in 2065 for women and from 79.5 to 84.3 years for men.

Some 20 percent of the population will be 65 years and older by 2035 and the percentage will be over 25 percent by 2061. After 2050, the working age (defined as 20 to 65 years) population will have to support more people of older than younger ages. Enditem
