Mexico managed to put an end to their 22-year-long string of bad luck at the Olimpico Metropolitano Stadium in San Pedro Sula by defeating Honduras 2-0 in their second match of the World Cup 2018 qualifiers.
Mexico's goals came in the 66th minute, from a powerful shot by Jesus Corona, and then in the 72nd minute from Jurgen Damm who had recently come on to the pitch.
Honduras started out with a fight, causing some good play to get dangerously close to the goal. However, overall the local side were disappointing in a match where their performance came across as lackluster and lacking in skill.
In the fifth minute Javier Hernandez "El Chicharito" just missed the target for Mexico with a header going over the bar.
In the 20th minute, Mexico began to close ranks and tried to take the opposition by surprise with a free kick.
At almost the end of the first half disaster struck when Honduras defensive midfielder Luis Garrido badly injured his knee during a tackle and had to be substituted by Arnold Peralta.
Doctors who examined the player straight after the accident told local media that his knee is not broken, as originally thought. However, Garrido has torn ligaments and will most likely be out of action for at least six months.
In the second half, Mexico had more chances on goal but still did not represent a real threat to Honduras until Corona came onto the pitch. This led to Mexico's first goal of the match.
Six minutes later Damm gave the team their second goal, which calmed the Mexican side a little.
Honduras were unable to get back on track after the opposition's goals.
Besides Honduras and Mexico, Group A of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) World Cup qualifiers include El Salvador and Canada.
In their first match, Mexico won 3-0 at home over El Salvador while Honduras lost 1-0 on their visit to Canada. Endi
