Members of the UN Security Council on Monday observed a minute of silence here at UN headquarters ahead of a council meeting to pay tribute to victims in Paris attacks.

At least 129 people were killed and 352 injured in the attacks on Friday night in Paris, for which the extremist group Islamic State has claimed responsibility.

While presiding over the regular monthly council meeting on the humanitarian situation in Syria, Justine Greening, UK Secretary of State for International Development, said the members of the Security Council express profound sadness and deep outrage at the horrendous terrorist attacks in Paris.

"To the family of the victims, both French and from 19 other countries at this point, and to the people and the government of France, the Security Council expresses its heartfelt sympathy and condolences," said Greening.

She also noted the terrorist attacks in Beirut Lebanon last week which left over 40 people dead, saying "the members of the Security Council offer their sympathy and condolences to all those countries affected." Enditem
