The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said on Monday that the Pirkanmaa District Court has arrested a foreigner suspected of war crimes, local media reported.

The 29-year-old man was captured by police on Friday night in Pirkanmaa, southwest Finland, and taken into custody in the Pirkanmaa District Court on Monday.

The preliminary investigation showed that the man was suspected of war crimes in Iraq in the summer of 2014, said NBI.

Jari Raty, Detective Chief Inspector of NBI, told the Finnish national broadcaster Yle that the offence was done in a situation where there was an armed conflict between different parties.

Raty said the police got the information about the case and reacted quickly last weekend.

He did not tell why the man lives in Finland, and refused to comment on whether the suspect has any link with the Islamic State.

In Finland, war crimes may be sentenced to a minimum of one-year imprisonment and a maximum of life imprisonment. Endit
