Norway said on Monday it would join Britain, Germany, Kuwait and the United Nations in co-host ing an international donor conference for Syria to be held in London in early February of next year.

"The war in Syria has caused immense humanitarian suffering. There is an urgent need for more funding to alleviate the humanitarian suffering in Syria and its neighboring countries, which are experiencing a massive influx of refugees," Norway's Foreign Minister Borge Brende said in a statement.

He said the objective of the conference was to raise significant new funding for humanitarian efforts in Syria and to provide increased support for Syria's neighboring countries next year and in the years ahead.

"We will focus on education and job opportunities for refugees and the local population in the areas where refugees are located, to improve their chances of supporting themselves and to help them regain hope for the future," Brende said.

Norway's Prime Minister Erna Solberg will open the conference together with British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, according to the Norwegian foreign ministry. Endit
