Japan to start construction of 2020 Olympics stadium in 2017

Japan is set to begin the construction of the main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in early 2017, local mediare ported Monday.

"If all goes well, it will beg in around the start of the year after next," Takakuni Ikeda, a board member of Japan Sport Council, was quoted as saying by the Kyodo news agency.

Monday was the deadline for submission of plans for the new National Stadium detailing the overall design and cost. Blueprints will be requested next year.

The amount of land allotted for the new stadium will be 113,000 square meters, about 1.5 times the size of the old one.

Demolition of the old stadium, which was built to host the 1964 Olympic Games, was completed late last month. Endit
