Cuba beats Mexican champions Santos Laguna in Havana

Xinhua, November 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Cuban football team triumphed on Saturday, by 1-0, in a friendly match against Santos Laguna, the reigning champions of the Mexican League.

Cuban forward Alexis Zuaznabar, who was a second-half substitute, picked up a rebound and slotted home in the 83rd minute.

With only a few spectators in the stands of the Pedro Marrero stadium, the game had few ups and downs, with the Cuban squad dominating throughout.

However, the Santos visitors had the chance to go ahead in the 53rd minute, after a break by Javier Orozco went begging.

Despite the quiet occasion, this was a momentous match as Santos Laguna is the first Mexican club to visit Cuba since 1947, when Leon played in the same stadium.

The Cuban team is also preparing for a clash with Panama on January 8 in the Central American nation, looking to secure its place in the 2016 Centennial Copa America in June 2016.  Endi
