Lebanon to intensify security measures after twin bombing

Xinhua, November 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam Friday vowed to intensify security measures "in all Lebanese regions" following the twin bombing that killed 43 people and injured 250 on Thursday, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.

"Security measures must be intensified in all Lebanese regions and the highest levels of vigilance must be maintained," said a statement released after a security meeting attended by Salam and other Lebanese top officials.

"Terrorism has never ceased planning to inflict harm and trigger strife in Lebanon," the statement added.

Minister of Justice Ashraf Rifi also said "the military public prosecution will take necessary measures to refer the twin Dahieh bombings to the Judicial Council."

On Thursday, at least 43 people were killed in Beirut in a twin bombing claimed by the Islamic State (IS), the bloodiest such an attack in years.

The Red Cross said at least 250 people were also wounded, several in critical condition, in the blasts that hit a busy shopping street in the Bourj al-Barajneh neighborhood, a stronghold of Hezbollah.

The IS later claimed responsibility for the bombing, saying that three suicide bombers were behind the attack. Endit
