The capital of Spain, Madrid, restricted parking on Friday in the city center for non-residents to fight high levels of nitrogen dioxide.
This was the first time Madrid put restrictions on parking for non-residents while it also enforced reduced traffic speeds on Thursday, especially in those roads that give access to the city, such as the M-30. Cars should reduce their speed to 70 km/hour.
The city council put on extra buses, asking people to use public transport instead of their own cars.
Madrid has around 3.25 million cars in circulation, which represents around 15 percent of the total number of cars in the country, according to Spain's National Department of Traffic. It also has 307,000 motorcycles as well as around 573,000 trucks and vans.
Madrid's Council for Environment and Mobility, Ines Sabanes, said Saturday would not see more restrictions applied to the city. If necessary, the city would have to reduce by 50 percent the traffic in the city center. Enditem
