The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) said Friday that it has detained "one of the leaders" of the al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front group, who was on the international wanted list.

"The arrested man is a citizen of one of the former Soviet republics. He had been participating in the Syrian conflict in 2013-2014," the SBU said in a statement, without giving more details on the identity of the detainee.

The man, who was arrested in the Ukrainian capital, is pending his extradition, the statement said.

In 2013, the Nusra Front, a branch of al-Qaeda operating mainly in Syria, was designated as "terrorist organization" by the United Nations Security Council. Endi
