China to further combine medical and elderly services

Xinhua, November 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

China will push forward the combination of medical and elderly services, an official at the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) stated on Friday.

With the population aged over 60 exceeding 212 million and accounting for 15.5 percent of the country's total population, a better combination of medical and elderly care services is required in China at the moment, said Vice Minister of NHFPC Wang Peian.

According to instructions released at an executive meeting of the State Council on Wednesday, China aims to publish an initial set of policies and establish a management system for the services by 2017 to make medical service significantly more accessible to the elderly.

By 2020, a basic mechanism and laws for combining the services is expected to be in place.

Also, a comprehensive service network that is moderate in scale and can be approached by those in both urban and rural areas will shape up by that time, when the service can generally meet the demands of the elderly.

To fulfill the goals, China will focus on extending medical service to communities and families, as well as encouraging elderly care institutions to provide those services, said Wang Peian.

In doing so, those medical facilities affiliated to elderly care institutions matching the conditions can enjoy basic medical insurance as well, while basic medical institutions should improve their service for home-based elderly people, Wang added. Endi
