American Lily Zhang caused an upset at the Swedish Open table tennis tournament on Thursday, beating Japanese Hina Hayata in six sets.

The 93rd-ranked Zhang, bronze medallist at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, played a solid game to oust the 59th-rated Japanese 12-10, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9.

"I was well aware that Hina was strong from the backhand," said Lily Zhang, adding that whenever possible I tried to play wide to her forehand.

Hina Hayata is left handed, dominant from the backhand, creating angles.

"Her services are good but they tended to be a little long and I was able to spin the return to the most," said Lily Zhang.

Lily Zhang will challenge DOO Hoi Kem of Hong Kong, China Friday. Endi
