Third biggest party in Croatian parliament proposes unified gov't

Xinhua, November 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

The third biggest party in Croatian parliament, MOST (Bridge), on Wednesday suggested forming a unified government consisting of ruling Social Democratic Party (SDP), opposition Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and itself after no party won enough votes to form a government alone.

"Croatia needs unity and developing the economy is a priority," Bozo Petrov, the president of the MOST, which won 19 seats in the Sunday's election, said at a news conference after initial talks with SDP and HDZ.

No party can form a government in parliament without its support.

Petrov said he hoped both political parties would accept his suggestion. "This is the only way to introduce reforms," he added.

Petrov said he believed his party could mediate between SDP and HDZ and that both parties must put an end to mutual animosity after 25 years.

According to preliminary official results, out of the 151 seats, the Patriotic Coalition led by HDZ won 59 seats and its main rival, Croatia Is Growing, led by SDP won 56 seats. Endit
