The airport in Denmark's capital city of Copenhagen saw its passenger traffic surge 6.2 percent in October, making it the busiest October in the airport's 90-year history, the airport said Wednesday.
The number of passengers at Copenhagen Airport in October increased to 2,476,553, driven partly by long-haul intercontinental routes, the airport said in a statement.
Intercontinental traffic grew by 7.1 percent in October, but domestic traffic was down by 5 percent due to lower capacity, the airport said.
"The strong 7.1 percent growth in international traffic underlines the importance of our plan to expand the airport and grow from 25 to 40 million passengers annually over the next couple of decades," said Thomas Woldbye, chief executive officer of the airport.
According to Woldbye, the number of long-haul routes out of Copenhagen has doubled in the past decade and will reach 34 routes next year.
The airport recently completed the expansion of the pier used for long-haul intercontinental routes, to accommodate the growth and the biggest passenger airliners.
Year-to-date passenger numbers at Copenhagen Airport totaled 22,607,558, a 2.5 percent increase over last year. Endit
