EP calls on member states to fulfill pay migration pledges

Xinhua, November 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Parliament (EP) on Wednesday urged European Union (EU) member states to fulfill their pledges and pay for migration action agreed by EU leaders.

According to the European Commission, the new trust funds set up for Syria and Africa are short of 2.22 billion euros (2.36 billion U.S. dollars) in national contributions expected from member states.

The Parliament's negotiating team for the 2016 EU budget said in a statement that just with the additional revenue from fines and higher-than-expected customs duties, member states could cover most of the urgent shortfalls.

The EU official data shows the EU Regional Trust Fund for Syria is short of 467.6 million euros while the fund for Africa needs another 1.75 billion euros. A further 59.6 million euros pledged by member states is missing from the budget for humanitarian aid. Endit
