Another nine deaths from dengue confirmed in Taiwan

Taiwan's disease control agency confirmed nine new deaths caused by dengue fever on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 150 since May.

Eight deaths were reported in Kaohsiung and one in Tainan, the agency said in a daily update on its website.

Among them, four were male and five female, aged between 54 and 81. Most were at higher risk, suffering from other chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, kidney and heart disease.

The authorities are still examining another 23 suspected deaths, the statement said.

The island has reported 32,390 cases of dengue fever as of Tuesday, with 395 new ones on Tuesday alone.

The epidemic outbreak has been the worst in years though the island is hit by the disease frequently. Last year there were 15,732 cases and 28 deaths. Prior to that, annual cases were around 2,000.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne, potentially fatal disease that mainly affects people in tropical and subtropical regions, causing fever, nausea and muscle and joint aches. Endi
