Tokyo stocks close higher on domestic earnings, U.S. rate hike expectations

Tokyo stocks closed higher Wednesday as upbeat domestic corporate earnings and profit outlooks coupled with expectations for a rate hike in the U.S. bolstered investor confidence.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 20.13 points, or 0.10 percent, from Tuesday to end the day at 19,691.39, while the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 5.84 points, or 0.37 percent, to finish at 1,595.32.

At the close of play the day's notable advancers comprised mining, textiles and apparel and real estate-related stocks. The day's turnover was 2,444.8 billion yen (about 19.88 billion U.S. dollars). Enditem
