A ceremony was held in the northeastern city of Harbin on Wednesday to celebrate the New York Islanders' 10 years of efforts in helping Chinese ice hockey.
Charles B. Wang, the owner of the NHL giant, has donated 38 million yuan (6 million U.S. dollars) in cash and equipment over a decade to help China raise the level of the game.
The Charles B. Wang Chinese Ice Hockey Hope Project has built 31 ice hockey schools in six provinces and municipalities, including 25 in Heilongjiang, the country's most northeastern province.
Charles, the founder of the Computer Associates International Inc., left China at the age of 8 for the United States and acquired the NY Islanders club in 2000.
The project has sponsored over 600 Chinese youngsters who learned the game in the United States, Canada and Russia and sent over 40 players to the Chinese national teams and 44 to the youth teams.
"We love to help China improve the game and encourage more people to take up the sport," said Wang. Endi
