Nearly 100 attacks on health facilities since March 2015 in Yemen: Red Cross

Xinhua, November 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Tuesday urged related forces to stop attacks on healthcare facilities in Yemen, saying close to 100 similar incidents have been reported since March 2015.

According to ICRC, the latest of these attacks took place in Al-Thawra hospital, one of the main health care facilities in Taiz, which was shelled several times on Sunday.

ICRC added on Oct. 26, an MSF hospital in Haydan district of Saada was also attacked.

"The neutrality of healthcare facilities and staff is not being respected. Health facilities are deliberately attacked and surgical and medical supplies are also being blocked from reaching hospitals in areas under siege," said Kedir Awol Omar, the deputy head of the ICRC delegation in Yemen.

ICRC revealed the health situation in Taiz has been particularly dire for months, with less than half of the previously functioning health facilities dealing with a large number of wounded people amidst severe shortage of supplies.

ICRC called on all those taking part in the fighting to allow supplies to be delivered to Taiz and other areas in the country, saying it has been trying to deliver medical supplies to Taiz for nearly two months but to no avail. Endit
