1 dead, 7 injured in S. Korean shipyard fire

Xinhua, November 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

One worker has been confirmed dead with seven others injured in a fire that broke out at a shipyard in South Korea's southern island of Geoje, local media reported Tuesday.

The fire broke out at around 10:40 a.m. local time inside an 8,500-ton LPG carrier under construction at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering shipyard, the Yonhap news agency reported, citing firefighting authorities.

It was extinguished about an hour after the outbreak.

One worker in his 50s died after breathing in toxic gas, and the seven injured are treated in a nearby hospital, with one suffering life-threatening injury and with three sustaining heavy injury.

About 130 workers were working inside the vessel at the time of the fire outbreak.

The fire was estimated to have been caused by a welding flame spreading to inflammable materials, but the exact cause was still under investigation.

On Aug. 24, another fire broke out at the shipyard, leaving two workers dead and seven others injured. Enditem
