Spending by New Zealanders on their credit and debit cards levelled off last month as fuel purchases fell, the government statistics agency said Tuesday.
Retail spending on electronic cards totalled 4.9 billion NZ dollars (3.2 billion U.S. dollars) in October, up 5.6 percent year on year, according to Statistics New Zealand.
However, retail spending was flat compared with September, following a rise of 0.9 percent in September.
"Retail spending was unchanged this month after rises in recent months," business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly said in a statement.
"Of the retail industries, consumables had the largest rise, while the largest fall was in fuel."
Core retail spending, which excludes the vehicle-related industries, rose 0.2 percent in October, following a 1.2-percent rise in September. Endit
